Mallory Weiss Syndrome---

What is Mallory Weiss Syndrome ?--
It is a condition associated with tear involving the inner layers of the esophagus. This leads to vomiting or retching followed by sudden onset vomiting of blood. This blood vomitus may continue for a variable period of time. It is more common in pregnancy.

What leads to Mallory Weiss Syndrome ?--
Severe vomiting or retching leads to severe traction forces on the esophageal layers. These ultimately lead to a tear in the inner layers. This rupture involves only the superficial layers & does not involve the entire thickness of the esophagus.

How is mallory Weiss Syndrome diagnosed ?--
Vomiting of blood (Hematemesis) after bouts of vomiting/ retching is very suggestive of Mallory Weiss Syndrome. The same can be confirmed by Esophagoscopy. Esophagoscopy is the visualisation of the inner esophagus with a scope passed through the mouth.

What is the treatment of Mallory Weiss Syndrome ?--
Mallory Weiss Syndrome can be treated using the same Esophagoscope that was used for visualisation of the tear. Though it is successful in most cases, some may require surgery.
