What
is PMS?--
PMS stands for Pre menstrual syndrome. This includes the entire gamut
of symptoms a lady experiences 7-10 days before the onset of bleeding.
what
are the various symptoms that make up PMS?--
Irritability, lassitude, malaise, headache, gastrointestinal upset,
frequency of urination, anxiety or depression, feeling of fullness
of the breast, abdomen, feet, hands. There can also be a flare up
of acne, migraine, breast pain. In introspective ladies all these
can become exaggerated & emerge as a well marked psychosomatic
disorder.
What
is the cause of these symptoms?
Though the exact cause of PMS is still obscure; what is definite is
that it occurs due to hormonal imbalance.
What
can be done to decrease these symptoms?--
- Vegetarian
diet-- It has been shown that women who eat more vegetarian diet
have less troubling PMS as compared to those who have animal protein
& fat.
- Fiber
rich food-- that means a lot of vegetables & fruits.
- Curb
your caffeine & alcohol intake. It can aggravate symptoms in
some women.
- Control
your craving for foods like chocolates & potato chips.
- Eat
more carbohydrates & less of fats.
- Consume
more calcium. An extra glass of milk has been shown to decrease
the mood swings & the pain during the periods.
- Limited
salt diet for the 10 days preceding menstruation. This can be easily
achieved by cutting down on pickles, papads & avoiding any added
salt in the diet.
- For
the breast discomfort adequate support & salt restriction does
help.
- Support
from family & the near ones can make a whole lot of difference.
